Although I’m a big advocate of delegating tasks, delegating doesn’t come without its obstacles. I know, because as I grow my business, I experience these obstacles first-hand.
You are painfully aware, there are only so many hours in the day. In order to meet your goals of your business growth, there’s no way around it, there will come a time when you must seek help.
The first obstacle I had to overcome was the feeling of losing control.
I believe most of us struggle with the fear of losing control of the business you’ve worked so hard on. After all, you have used your skills and expertise to build your business. Now, you’ve grown to a point when you have realized that you must let go and seek help to serve your customers better, and ultimately, achieve your financial goals.
Delegating doesn’t mean losing control
Sure, there’s a certain amount of control lost. Mainly you won’t have your fingers in all the little details that come with doing tasks. You must remember that you have ultimate control of how your business is run. You have control of creating a culture within your team. Just because you delegate and are not addressing every detail, you don’t give up control of your overall direction and mission of your company.
No matter what size your company is, don’t say to yourself, “How am I going to get everything done?” Instead, you should say, “How will this get done?”
Yes, they are very similar sentences, but they have two very different outcomes.
You are limited by the words “How am I going to get everything done?” There’s only one of you. You focus on piling up more work for yourself. You struggle and feel bad because you think you should be able to do more, to get it all done, but you always seem to fall short. You continue to hope that someday you’ll be able to afford someone to come in and take care of the details for you. Someday, the burden of your feelings of overwhelm will suddenly be lifted. The problem is, that “someday” never comes.
Your mindset matters
By shifting your perspective to “how will this get done?” you open up your possibilities. You begin to think differently. You imagine how your company will look like down the road.
Beginning with the end in mind and viewing how someone else will be able to take over tasks from the very beginning gives you a great deal of control.
Even though you may have to do the tasks for now, you begin to develop processes that can be easily turned over to someone else. Breaking things down into pieces of an overall goal, will allow you to delegate bits at a time. When you are allowed to delegate tasks a little at a time, you begin to shift from worrying about details, to managing outcomes.
The hardest step is to let go and delegate for the first time, but soon, you’ll gain momentum. You’ll see that opportunity begins to present itself. You begin delegating more and more because you will see how much more productive you are in your business growth.
You’ll manage your business, instead of working on all the little details within your business.
Focus on the quality of the outcome
You still maintain the control you desire, but your focus changes from the details of the tasks to the quality of the outcomes you desire.
It all starts with a mindset of “how will this get done?”
