Do you hear the difference between:
“Not a problem” and “It’s my pleasure”?
I never really gave it much thought until I came across an article several weeks ago describing how simply making a shift and using “It’s my pleasure” in place of “Not a problem” has a great positive impact in working with customers. Actually, it has a great impact with anyone we interact with. I glanced at the article and made a mental note. I can’t even find the article anymore, but it has really stuck with me.
Think about it, how many times do we use the phrase, “not a problem”? For example, when someone opens the door for you and you say, “Thank You.” The response, often times is, “not a problem.”
The word “problem” has a negative connotation. Are we interrupting or being a bother and the person has to reassure us that we are in fact, “not a problem”?
For the past several weeks, I have made an effort to change my phrasing to “it’s my pleasure.” After all, I love helping my clients and friends. I don’t want them to think they are a bother, because when I’m able to be helpful, it is truly my pleasure.
It’s a subtle change and it makes a huge difference subconsciously to both you and your customers.
If you find yourself saying “not a problem,” try switching to “it’s my pleasure.” Let me know how it impacts you.
